The block is one of the essential components of a classic sailing vessel's rigging. It is used to redirect, guide and multiply loads throughout the running rigging.
Selecting the correct block depends on rope diameter, working load and the intended application. The sheave must allow smooth rope movement without pinching while maintaining adequate strength for the loads involved.
On a classic yacht, blocks contribute not only to the proper operation of the rig but also to the overall authenticity of the deck hardware. Models in bronze, brass or varnished wood naturally complement timber decks, varnished spars and traditional rigging.
For regular use, it is recommended to inspect the sheave, axle, cheeks and fittings. A properly sized block improves rope handling and reduces premature wear of the running rigging.
